NORTH WEST DONEGAL AREA SHORE/SEA ANGLING - ARDS FOREST PARK

Small quay here to fish from. Optimum fishing at the lower end of the tide. Ground baiting for mullet here. Flounder and seatrout can also be caught here.

NORTH WEST DONEGAL AREA SHORE/SEA ANGLING - BALLYHIERAN BAY

Shows most sand to the west. High rocks to the east. Good for autumn shore angling. Cod, dab, seatrout, coalfish and flounder most commonly caught. Occasional sea bass caught in surf. Optimum time to fish after strong northerly winds.

NORTH WEST DONEGAL AREA SHORE/SEA ANGLING - BALLYNESS STRAND

The eastern end near the river ray is a good area all year round for surf casting for dabs, coalfish and flounder and in autumn bass can be caught here. The Ballyness harbour area is a good spot for lugworm bait.

Very good for spinning for mackerel in summer. Pollack, launce and coalfish caught here and sometimes seatrout. Bottom fishing is possible for dab and plaice over sandy areas.

This is a large sandy area good for casting out to catch flounder, dab, plaice and dogfish. Summer spinning from the pier will produce mackerel, launce and sometimes garfish.

Long stretch of beach and dunes to the north east of the town which is a good area for night fishing in summer. Good surf casting at the western end after easterly winds. There are excellent bait areas in the estuary for lugworm and ragworm.

NORTH WEST DONEGAL AREA SHORE/SEA ANGLING - FANAD HEAD

The rocks here give access to deep casting. The rocks to the north of the lighthouse can produce catches of pollack and mackerel (summer) when spinning. Closer to the rocks wrasse are caught.

Rogue waves and large swells here so exercise caution. The westertn side of the head is good for wrasse, mackerel, pollack and coalfish.

Ray, codling, dogfish, dabs and sometimes ray can be caught casting over the sand here.

NORTH WEST DONEGAL AREA SHORE/SEA ANGLING - MULROY BAY

Good for boat fishing. Can launch small boats from slipway at Fanny's Bay. Mulroy Bay has several deep spots in the main channel. Good for dogfish, ray, tope, especially on a rising tide. Codling, whiting, gurnards and pollack also typical of the bay between Melmore Head and Ballyhoorisky point. Ledger rigs baited with worm work well. The mudflats in Mulroy Bay are excellent for producing bait such as ragworm and lugworm.

NORTH WEST DONEGAL AREA SHORE/SEA ANGLING - PORT-NA-BLAGH

Best fished at high water from the pier for wrasse, coalfish and pollack and mackerel in summer. To the north of the estuary, there are rocks that can be used for fishing for pollack and wrasse at high tide. Charter boats operate from the pier during summer boats covering deeper areas and wrecks where bluefin tuna, ballan wrasse, skate, cuckoo wrasse, dab, spurdog, gurnard and torsk are fished for.

NORTH WEST DONEGAL AREA SHORE/SEA ANGLING - PORTSALON PIER

Good for night fishing for ray. Good for bottom fishing for plaice, flounder, dabs and dogfish. Very low tides at pier with no water, so fish at the higher ends of the tide.

Good surf casting for seatrout, dab, bass and flounder. Best baits to use here are lugworm and ragworm. Good night fishing here in summer for ray however you will need calm conditions and a long cast.

NORTH WEST DONEGAL AREA SHORE/SEA ANGLING - RATHMULLEN PIER

Good for night time ray fishing on slack tide. Occasional tope caught nut difficult to land. Charter angling boats are available from pier from spring through to autumn. Cod, whiting, dab, dogfish, wrasse and multiple other species can be caught in the deeper water outside the pier area.

Sandy beach in beautiful location. Access to deep water fishing can be had from the rocks on the north and south shores of the bay. Optimal fishing at night on rising tide using bottom baits for gurnard, dogfish, dab and ray. Spinning can produce seatrout, mackerel, launce and pollack.
